In 2014, "Happy" by Pharrell was one of the most popular songs. It topped the charts in the U.S. and other countries throughout the world. The song sold 6.45 million copies and Pharrell won many awards for the song. However, although Pharrell made a lot of money from the song through downloads, music streaming apps and websites such as Pandora did not help Pharrell at all. In total, the song earned $2,700, which was split in half between Pharrell and Sony/ ATV Publishing. Is the music streaming industry destined to leave artists unhappy?
